Consultative Meeting with UN High Representative
The aim of the meeting was to exchange views on how civil society and the UN system can collaborate to navigate today’s complex political environment and sustain a strong, forward-looking disarmament agenda, particularly amid the serious pressures on multilateralism and international security.

Across continents, 85 civil society partners came together to shape a safer
future through
disarmament and dialogue.
High Representative Izumi Nakamitsu brought together civil society voices from around the globe - both in the room at UNHQ and online - for a forward-looking hybrid consultation.
The discussion tackled practical ways to strengthen UN-CSO (Civil Society Organisations) partnerships and boost transparency in military spending, even as participants voiced deep concerns about today’s security challenges and shrinking civic space.
The meeting reflected true global diversity, with 85+ participants joining from Africa, Asia,
Latin America and beyond.

The United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs was established in January 1998 as the Department for Disarmament Affairs which was part of the SG’s programme for reform in accordance with his report to the General Assembly (A/51/950). It was originally established in 1982 upon the recommendation of the General Assembly’s second special session on disarmament (SSOD II). In 1992, its name was changed to Centre for Disarmament Affairs, under the Department of Political Affairs. At the end of 1997, it was renamed Department for Disarmament Affairs and in 2007, it became the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs.
